I picked this up for my daughter who will surely love it, also because I love the author’s illustrations (we have her other children’s books). But for me, the writing and characters fell flat. It didn’t really engage me as a reader and I wasn’t invested in the characters. The book was a bit unbalanced with too much emphasis on details that weren’t about character development but rather on setting and atmosphere. With that said, it’s a sweet story for younger readers.

“The Librarian spied them and hobbled over. ‘I never asked, but how did your stories end?’ . . . ‘They were like when knights rescue fair maidens,’ Snow said, looking sideways at Rose. ‘Only no knights, and the maidens weren’t the ones who needed rescuing.’”

This book was absolutely lovely! It’s a quick middle grade retelling of Snow White and Rose Red, and Emily Winfield Martin has done an incredibly magical job of sharing both the story and her incredible illustrations.

It’s lush, full of beautiful imagery and images, and with the heart to go with that. This is truly just a perfect read. Curl up with a mug of tea, and read this book; you will not be disappointed.

Immerse yourself to the enchanted woods and discover the wonderful folklore of Snow & Rose. Truly enjoyed this book, it gave such cozy vibes as well as some mystery as you try to figure out what spell the cottage village are under. Easy and quick read, highly recommend.

Cute. I liked the illustrations.
But middle-grade books just aren't for me.
I thought it would be a quick read, but I really dragged through it.
Would recommend for elementary school kids.

Snow and Rose once had a father and a mother who loves them very much, they had a nice house with a garden for each of the girls. But then their father went into the woods and never came back, now their mother is sad though she still loves her girls. They live in a small cottage in the woods now with no garden for Snow and Rose. But there's something strange in these woods and the strangeness is drawing Snow & Rose in.

This book would make a lovely read aloud to a child or two, you'd want to make sure the listeners got a good view of the pictures. The pictures are lovely and add some magic to this fairy tale type story. It was well written and simply magical.
