I absolutely devoured this book, holy shit!
Other than reading the blurb for the book I went in fairly blind. I knew I was looking at an enemies to lovers story with a with a witch hunter. I didn't even know if it was a standalone or a a series. But let me tell you, it's been a long time since a fantasy book had me in its hooks like this one did.
The general plot of the book is a bit straightforward - Rune, our witch by the name of Crimson Moth, is rescuing witches and that are doomed to be executed. Gideon, is a witch hunter trying to capture the Crimson Moth.
But what Ciccarelli has done has taken that simple plot and woven it into a high concept world with the New Republic. We've got witches and blood magic but also a city setting with an interesting law system!
Throughout reading the book I was getting vibes from some of my favourite series - some heavy Rhys under the mountain vibes, some similarities with the feels I got from Celeana in ToG, but also a familiar almost of Six of Crows-ish style setting and familiarity.
The writing style, the setting, the plot - it all played into themes and tropes that I love most in my fantasy books and I think that's a big part of why I was so hooked.
The book is a gripping fantasy, but I loved being able to pick up on certain detail and come up with my own thoughts and theories about what they all meant - some I was spot on with, others I was way off the mark.
You know a book is good when the last 50 or so pages had my gasping, yelling and in tears.
Either way, it's been a long time since I got about 20% into a book a was thinking to myself 'I hope this is a series or at least a duology'. So I am SO happy there's a book 2. I've already preordered it!
