This Ripley novel was a bit of roller coaster ride, especially in my feelings toward Tom. In the beginning of the novel, our favorite anti-hero places another man (Jonathan) in harm's way. Jonathan is pulled into the mire, despite having a wife and young son. I felt terrible for Jonathan and that Tom had finally become, in my mind, the despicable character that he is. However, Highsmith masterfully pulled me back along with Tom, rooting for his success and still feeling sympathetic for Jonathan. A great read and a step up from the 2nd novel in the series.

A strong recovery from the weak second book.
Once again, Patricia Highsmith - through Tom Ripley - continues to explore Europe; this time focussing mainly on France. She is deftly skilled at creating a word that slowly closes-in on her characters; it is thrilling and suffocating.
I also loved the dual protagonists in this book - the story unfolds through Tom and Jonathan. Both very different people leading very different lives, but connected through one man and one incident.

So, this time Tom is turning a terminal patience into an international killer, with his usual charm and twisted logic. And this odd couple manage to fool even Mafia itself.
I didn't enjoyed it as the previous twos because there's less of Tom in this this story. I actually like the way he thinks himself out of trouble, usually making a profit. Jonathan, his partner in this game, has a more plain personality. The best part is imagining his face when Tom turned to him on the train to Paris and offer his help to kill the mafioso they're looking after.

‘Ripley’s Game’ refers to the plan that Tom Ripley concocts to get the most unlikely person to commit murder and so realize the perfect crime. As always with Highsmith, things don’t always go to plan and we are suddenly in the middle of an exciting thriller. Highsmith has an incredible talent for laying the characters before us and letting us, the readers, make judgements about their actions. A great Sunday afternoon read.
