This book felt like the best hug. I feel like now that I'm in school, it's harder to read books about highschool, but dang this one was good.

This book was not like what I normally read but I heard a good review and decided it sounded like a story worth reading. I was right. I loved this book front to back and I couldn’t stop reading it. Would definitely recommend:)

This was an amazing, incredibly well written book. Emoni had one of the most distinct character voices that I've seen in a long time. She, and everyone else in the story, felt so very real, and that was beautiful and made the story so much better. I loved watching her journey from the start of teh story, at the beginning of her senior year of high school, to the end, at graduation. This book had really good character development across the board. Emoni was so full of identity - her home, her family, her culture, her roots, her love of cooking, her insecurities, her joys, all of it was so wonderful to read about. I loved learning about her, and watching her go through her coming of age journey. I feel really proud of her, which is a bit silly, but she's such a strong person, and I wish she were real. I'd love to eat her cooking, haha! I read this in one sitting, and its short chapters were nice, as well as the gorgeous cover art! 4.5 stars. I bought With the Fire on High because it's been on my want-to-read list for a while, and the bookstore sent an email to support black authors (and locally owned businesses), so it was three for one, so to speak, in terms of what I got out of it. I'd definitely recommend this!

So well written, I felt like I was listening to a long slam poetry performance! I also felt so immersed, like Emoni's pain was my pain. I would be pacing up and down so angry for her, but I am glad she found her way!

Would give 1,000 stars if I could. I loved this book and I love Elizabeth Acevedo’s writing (and voice! audio experience is A+) so so much.

This read was enjoyable and lighthearted. The characters were well developed and relatable. The writing style and chapter structure made the pace feel like it was continuing to move forward, while also filling in gaps from the past.

I picked this book mostly for it cover but I wasn’t disappointed. [b:With the Fire on High|38739562|With the Fire on High|Elizabeth Acevedo|https://i.gr-assets.com/images/S/compressed.photo.goodreads.com/books/1537991887l/38739562._SY75_.jpg|60327032] was up to its cover. I’m not much of a young adult contemporary lover but Elizabeth Acevedo struck home. The story was as I like them. Despite the many struggles of a teenage mother, it was pure happiness, with lots of diversity and culture and without unnecessary dramas. The writing was enticing. The characters were realistic. The romance was cute. And the cooking just seemed delicious.
