Finally finished!! I agree that the book is slow paced but I would not call it boring. I found it very tense and the unraveling mysteries were very thrilling. I will say I found it silly that Ned found mysteries in things that on the surface didn’t seem like mysteries at all (ex: Gracie Everdeen) but I was able to get past that. The ending had me totally gripped!!!

I see a lot of reviews mentioning that Ned is a misogynist and I usually hate this argument but….that really feels like it’s the point? He has a very dated view of women and it ends up being his undoing. I don’t think anyone has to find it particularly pleasant but it was very obviously a choice by the author.

I wanted to love this so badly. It was recommended to me because Midsommar is one of my favorite movies, and I was looking for similar folk horror.

The first 300 pages are not horror in the slightest. I didn’t love the main character but some of the side characters (like The Widow) were enough to keep me interested. It was a slog to get through, but I was hoping for payoff.

The end of the book is atrocious. If you picked up on the author’s misogynistic undertones in the beginning of the book, you win! You get several pages of a
GRAPHIC SA perpetrated by the narrator for revenge, and somehow all the people in the town just… don’t really care that much???
. The ending was so easy to see coming, and it was evident through his language that he really wanted to portray all of his female characters as conniving and evil.

Again, I REALLY wanted to love this book. Horror about an isolated group of people who welcome outsiders and end up being terrifying? One of my favorite sub-genres. But my goodness, this felt like a waste of time with no payoff.

It’s actually pretty fantastic and quiet a page turner. It’s sold on being scary with lots of horror elements but is closer to a investigation of cults then it is to a horror story. The funny part is that this is like a precursor to Midsommar, but the “horror” readers are supposed to feel comes from the power of women dominating men and men being the victims. It’s Midsommar except from the boyfriend’s perspective.
