The pacing was very similar to the first one, which I appreciate because I like fast-paced books.

I felt pretty much exactly the same as I did the first one. I enjoyed the riddles and puzzles. I like the characters and especially how despite Jasmine not always agreeing with them, she doesn't come off as annoying. She gives her two cents, and they all move on.

The fight was interesting, although I felt like that was too easy of an out for someone that was allegedly an all-powerful being. Same with when they were saved the first time. Both times ended too quickly and too conveniently.

I did enjoy the ending itself though, and I'm really excited to continue on!

An improvement over the first entry, The Lake of Tears flourishes without the burden of setting up the story and allows Emily Rodda to flex some creative muscle, particularly with the new monsters and races introduced. Unfortunately, it also highlights a recurring issue with these novels - weak climaxes that are resolved too quickly and abrupt denouements that are wholly unsatisfying.
