"How to Win a Breakup" is a fake-dating romance between one of the top students at an elite school and a hockey player she meets volunteering at a family shelter. Fake dating doesn't work as well for me when it's only one perspective. It's frustrating to hear the same character's feelings over and over. I was a bit disappointed in the identity of the Earl's gossip Instagram account because it felt like a throwaway. I supposed it's realistic, but it made the account feel like a plot device. Overall, I enjoyed the story. I loved Daniel and learning about his background (possibly another reason I wanted his perspective). Samiah grows a good bit throughout the book. Overall, I enjoyed this book, and I'm happy to keep reading Heron's work.

Many thanks to Skyscape and NetGalley for providing an ARC of this book. Fake dating has never been more appealing when put in an academically-rigorous setting and written by the lovely Farah Heron! This book follows coding nerd Samaya who gets dumped by Devin, her boyfriend of two years who then proceeds to hook up with her frenemy. Frustrated and confused, Samaya hatches a plan to “win” the breakup when she meets Daniel, a hockey nerd with a love of baking. The two plan to fake date and get sweet, sweet revenge by showing up Devin. This book was ripe with teen drama, sweet treats, and a strangers-to-lovers romance that quickly became my favorite thing about the book. I was however frustrated by the lack of depth in the characters with seemingly nothing making me excited about seeing them succeed or sad about seeing them fail. Both Samaya and Daniel were more interesting when they dated each other and felt like halves of a whole when separated. Taking all of this into account, I decided to give the book a 3.3 out of 5 stars. My love for the fake dating trope was what really kept me turning each page. Overall, How To Win a Break Up was a sweet story that has tons of heart and soul stitched into every page!

There were so many aspects of this book that I loved, I just didn't like one thing and it was pretty big. I guess I hate the plot line of a school having a gossip girl type account and the kids not tell the parents until something BIG happens. It's just gross to me.

Overall I liked their relationship, outside of the BIG thing that someone used against them. I liked the book. I did. I even guessed who was the catfish.

This was a fun YA! It's been a while since I read a YA romance and I'm so glad it was this one!

Things I liked:
-gossip girl vibes but much less toxic
-a boy who plays hockey AND bakes!
-a FMC who embraces her nerdiness
-really appreciated how quickly the initial "lie" was cleared up
-the friend group and the ways they communicated with each other
-every character at the shelter
-didn't see the twist about Daniel's family

Things I didn't love:
-not much honestly..wanted more time with them as a couple at the end
-in the audiobook the narrator read "IRL" as all the letters and every time it (at least 4x) it took me out of the story because I don't think people actually say that, they type it
-wanted more from the reveals about the gossip sight and the mystery video game friend

Overall, would recommend this if you're looking for a pretty cute fake dating YA romance!

*3.75* this one was definitely cute. I’ve decided I very much enjoy Farah’s writing style. Daniel’s character in this book was so perfectly developed he had the best vibes. Love the diverse backgrounds that Farrah includes in her books. My only issue was that it was a little to YA for me (it’s a YA book though so that could be a me issue) and that drama dragged the plot a little too much for me.
