If Gladwell is at his worst when he’s fitting anecdotes into preconceived frameworks, he’s at his best when he’s telling a good story. There’s a little of both here, but more of the latter. The audiobook is basically a very nicely produced extended podcast, replete with audio recordings, sound design, and original music. I love podcasts, but this wasn’t what I was expecting - so it took a minute to adjust. Once I settled in, though, I was thoroughly engrossed. Gladwell is a great storyteller, and his story here is fascinating and touches on aspects of WWII that I didn’t know at all.Â

Malcolm Gladwell is a bit of a pompous know-it-all, relentlessly confident in all of his assertions... but dang he weaves an excellent story from reliable sources. Particularly good because it began as an audiobook first.Â

Written very much in Gladwell’s Revisionist History tone, this book is super readable, even if the content is at times disturbing.Â
