60% of the book was him quoting or rephrasing other people. Had high expectations and they were not met. Maybe his wife has a better perspective on it, but from him meh. Does not help someone who's taking care of someone disabled.

Full of cold comforts, and reads like a tract. "Did you know that Jesus died on a cross to wash away your sins?" That kinda language all the way through.

Furman (who suffers from a nerve issue in his arms) writes from a position of experience: he's someone hurting who has been helped by many. He provides wisdom that will be timely and helpful for people who help those who are hurting ... and that's most of us. For me, Furman's thoughts find application in terms of parenting foster children and adopted children. Time and again his writing is directly applicable to our family.
