I'll be honest, I don't really get the insane amounts of hype surrounding this book. I've been putting off reading it, afraid it would rip my heart out and stomp on it. But it didn't? Yeah, I felt sad for them, but nothing groundbreaking. It was a good read, but didn't really stand out (to me, at least). I'm obviously in the minority on that one, though.

Most emotional book I've read but so so beautiful and inspiring, it actually made me look at life in a way I never really did before.

Was fairly disappointed with this book, as I thought the concept was really interesting and had the potential to be really great, but it unfortunately just wasn’t executed well enough.

I had no emotional connection to the characters, and the development between the main characters’ relationship just felt awfully forced.
Spoiler I could definitely believe that these two would have been friends, but the transition of their relationship into a more romantic one felt very artificial, and happened just because. There was just no romantic chemistry between them at all.
The character development felt very sudden and unnatural, and how the pair overcome their fears that easily just didn’t seem realistic.

Perhaps people in their teens may enjoy this book more, as it’s fairly simple and while covering a topic as profound as death, is easy to digest and doesn’t go into too many of the moral complexities involved with such a topic.

Exactly what you'd expect from a book with this title. In addition to the focus on the two main characters and the relationship they foster, I thought it was an elegant touch to interweave several additional character stories into the larger picture - showing just how accidentally connected we really are.

As far as the two main characters, Mateo and Rufus; I did find Mateo to be particularly frustrating the first half of the book, but that just lent to the charm of him as the story progressed. I would have liked to see a larger focus on Rufus and his growth, personally. It felt like the book was split 75/25 between Mateo's issues and Rufus'.

SpoilerThe short story "The Father Does Not Die at the End" included in the collector's edition was so heartbreaking... and absolutely tied the story off in a perfect way. I would not have considered the story complete without it.

i put off reading this book for a while and not because the plot didn’t interest me but because i hadn’t ever given reading a good go and i saw how much it initially got hyped up on tiktok. my best friend bought it for me as a gift and i can honestly say if you’re struggling to get into a reading flow this book is perfect for breaking down that barrier, the characters are lovable and the development of mateo and rufus is very strong with their flaws being one of the main focuses of the book. this book is uplifting and powerful and holds a strong sense of hope. i can imagine if i had read this as a younger adult it would have given me push i needed in order to live and not just survive.
