Fattily Ever After: A Black Fat Girl's Guide to Living Life Unapologetically by Stephanie Yeboah
alynic93's review
I started reading this book exactly when I needed it. When I was coming to terms with being fat for the first time in my life. It truly helped me on my body positivity journey. I put the book down for a bit and when I finally picked it back up nearly two years later, I was in a different place in my life. This book is PERFECT for someone at the beginning of their journey. I’m ready for the next step and therefore felt bored by it.

I really enjoyed this book!! As a fat, mixed woman I found that I could relate a lot to what was said. I do however acknowledge that I’m white passing and so there were also aspects that I couldn’t relate to, but they were teaching moments, educating me on what it’s like to exist and grow up in a western society as a black, fat woman. The book is absolutely beautifully presented and I would recommend it to anyone and everyone!!

This is an approachable and very important read. I think it would make a really good entry point for anyone just beginning their journey to throw off diet culture, and I think it's especially important because it speaks to the intersection of anti-fat and anti-Black biases. I appreciated Yeboah's vulnerability in writing this; it can't be easy relieving some of the awful things she relives in this book.

Despite not being of the age, size and ethnicity of the target audience I felt that Stephanie still had a lot to say to me. I've been younger and much, much bigger and I totally get what she has to say which boils down to be kind to everyone especially yourself

This was so hard to read. How long do women have to be treated and made to feel like this and in 2020 surely? This made me want to stay in and cry, which I did because I'm sick and so everyone gets to leave me alone. I wonder what it says about this society when many women and girls can relate to almost everything in this book?

An absolute must read. Whether you relate to the book or are looking for an entirely new perspective, this book is imperative in our anti-racism and fat acceptance journeys. Probably my favourite book of 2020 and I’ve had a lot of time to read this year. Also give Stephanie (the author) a follow on Instagram, you won’t regret it.
