Not one of my favorite things. The narrative is rushed, and the images feel like bits and pieces. The strongest parts are done in a comic book style. Obviously Allen Say's strength is in his art. Though his story is nice, and if you are a big fan certainly it is interesting to know, it is not particularly riveting and the parts that could be are glossed over.

Wow, happened upon this at the library, and read.

Cried a couple of times, laughed a few, and fully enjoyed.

What an amazing experience for a young dedicated artist.

This beautiful and appealing biography, with its mix of text and photographs and graphic-novel style panels, will inspire elementary and middle school students-- if they take the time to open it and see how engaging it is. Sadly, it doesn't have a lot of "curb appeal" and most children will probably pass it by unless they hear it book-talked. But in the right hands (especially those of other aspiring artists), this story of Allan Say's childhood and teenage years in Japan will make for a memorable read. The drawings are wonderful, and learning how he got his start as an artist is nothing short of remarkable.

Allen Say always conveys so much through his stories and illustrations. This book tells the story of his childhood and how he became the illustrator that he is. The love and respect for those who taught him and supported him shows through on every page, as does the personality of the author himself. It was fascinating to see the life of one child born in Japan shortly before World War II, and how he was affected.

A really beautiful autobiography/comic book/graphic novel. Fascinating look at how Allen Say became an illustrator despite paternal disapproval, and the sensei who become his surrogate father. Kids will be fascinated by Say being given his own apartment at the age of 12!
