This is my favorite book so far by Sarah J Maas and I’ve read her 3 most famous series. It is difficult and brutal and honest and surprising. She makes you feel scornful of the main characters but then deeply redeems them as complicated people. I don’t think the second book lives up to this one, which is a shock to the system having just finished Throne of Glass.

I enjoyed this book so much more than I thought it would originally. It was wonderful. I loved all the characters! Bryce is by far my favourite Maas female character so far. The world and the magic are all wonderful. I thought it was really fun to have a book based on the ancient Roman Empire with some other influences sprinkled in. I can’t wait to see what happens in the next book!

I DNF’d the first time because my heart just wasn’t in it, but I’m really glad I came back to it! The narrator really made getting into this book SO MUCH EASIER, and it took me until about chapter 13/14 to become truly invested. I liked the buddy cop vibes and something about Hunt the fallen edgelord does it for me. At first I found Bryce kind of insufferable with a bit of a holier than thou complex but I think that her interactions with syrinx and Lehabah really humanized her and made her a bit more well rounded in the personality department. Just like any SJM book, the last 25% of the book was just a WILD time. Can’t wait to read the next two!

3.75 stars for me....the lowest I have EVER rated a SJM book. While it definitely kept my intrest towards the middle to end, it took almost 40 chapters for me to get into it. I almost dnf'd. I struggled to get into this book...I just couldn't relate to any characters at all, especially Bryce. I didn't like her at all in the beginning, but by the end she grew on me. This is my 2nd modern fantasy, and I do plan to continue the series
