As most can agree, this was ALOT of world building and some plot. But I think the clunkiness of the world building did struggle with getting through to about 70% when the plot thicken (literally). But I really did enjoy the ending and the twist. There is definitely slow burn romance but I think this more about the love left behind and following grief and the true bonds of friendship.

Tropes: slow burn, friends to lovers, angels and demons, fantasy, shifters, found family.

Trigger warnings: grief, death of friend, suicide, gore, death, war, injury

This is my favorite book so far by Sarah J Maas and I’ve read her 3 most famous series. It is difficult and brutal and honest and surprising. She makes you feel scornful of the main characters but then deeply redeems them as complicated people. I don’t think the second book lives up to this one, which is a shock to the system having just finished Throne of Glass.

Fun and original story with very lovable characters! There were many details about magic, artifacts, society that were hard to keep track of but it didn’t detract from the story overall and many pieces sort of fell into place. The mysteries, twists, and how the characters and their relationships were written really carried the book. Not a huge fan of the writing style in general- odd terms were used sometimes, sentences felt unfinished/unclear, and there were some corny moments, but it didn’t take away from the plot.

I enjoyed this book so much more than I thought it would originally. It was wonderful. I loved all the characters! Bryce is by far my favourite Maas female character so far. The world and the magic are all wonderful. I thought it was really fun to have a book based on the ancient Roman Empire with some other influences sprinkled in. I can’t wait to see what happens in the next book!

This book was sooo good, and I thoroughly enjoyed the graphic audio. While this urban fantasy technically info-dumps at the beginning, it is written in such a way that you can breeze through the first 200 pages without paying too close attention and you can still get the gist of what is happening, with those info-dump ideas looping back. You are dropped into the world, which means if you get caught up on the info you might have a hard time getting into it. I love how Maas writes flawed characters that you still root for. And I cried multiple times in the last 30% of this book, so it was a huge winner for me. I can’t wait to start the next book!

Damn, this book had me sobbing so hard. I had to rehydrate after chapter 97.

In the beginning of the book I was so confused what was going on. The cursing was not my favorite, the dystopian setting I had trouble adjusting too and the constant sexualising of each other was bothersome.

But after some chapters I got into it, the setting, the story, the characters. This book was a chaotic rollercoaster. And I was here for the ride.

Of all the Sarah J Maas books this one had the most fast pace (I think) so far. Not as much spice. Which was fine of course. I don't think I will ever re-read this one but boy, it earned a place on my favorites shelve.

Through love, all is possible.
