Love the details in the illustrations (the teeth on the shield, whatever that grey creature on page 4 is, the pirate tattoos) and the story will appeal to young fantasy readers.

This book is very cute. It was narrated to me by my third grader, and she was captivated by it.
A boy named Auggie lives on an island owned by a man named Professor Cake. Auggie has a job, he is the caretaker for the magical and mysterious animals in the island's stables. His sidekick is a stick-in-the-mud (a talking, transforming stick) named Fen. Adorably grumpy Fen is my fave.
The illustrations are delightful, and the book wouldn't be the same without them.

Thank you to Edelweiss Plus for an advanced reading copy.
Young readers are going to love this series filled with magical creatures, and adults are going to enjoy the rich language and play on words! In this first book, eight-year-old Auggie lives on an island and is in charge of the one-of-a-kind magical beasts, where a new stable appears when there is a new creature. With the arrival of a swamp-like stable but no creature in the stable, Auggie must go into the swamp to find it. He discovers the stable is for Willa, a wisp with magical powers can search for treasure. Some men wish to capture Willa-the-wisp and use her to find treasure.
A delightful introduction to what will be a fun series to read independently or as a read-aloud. Another chapter book series to add to collections!

The kid and I read this in one sitting. We both loved it, I think equally. Definitely going to pick up the next one.
