okay guys. hear me out, im not normally a huge fan of duets only because i hate when things are left on a cliff hanger. BUT this is one worth reading. this was my first book by JC hawke. I first found her when I had just gotten abck into reading and I dont know what she put in this but it is complete fire. I was drawn into this book from the first chapter. There is a big friend group who you just fall in love with and want to cheer on. They give you the best laughs and we are all now fans of TUESDAYS (iykyk)! we love an angsty, spicy, billionaire romance book and this is exactly what this was. This was also one of the most emotional books that ive read in a long time. this book had me smiling, laughing, gasping, and also crying. i honestly wanted to hit mason with a bat over the head sometimes because i swear he doesn't think before he speaks. they have been super toxic for each other and honestly im here for it! but overall i know how deeply he cares for and loves nina. im not going to give away how this one ends, but just know that there is a lot more that is going to happen in book two- grand love!

Grand Lies is the first book in The Promise Duet and sets up the story of Nina and Masen. Nina is a dancer with a difficult past and Mase is your typical billionaire playboy - until he meets Nina that is. Once they meet, Masen becomes overly protective and exceedingly alpha male in his quest to make Nina his.

This is Hawke's debut novel and I think overall it was a good job. The characters and storyline, while incredibly drama-filled, were consistent throughout; and despite the many ups-and-downs of their tumultuous relationship, you always knew where they stood with each other.

To be honest, I think the biggest thing I personally struggled with in this story was the hero and heroine's relationship. There was a lot of on-and-off moments that had me wondering about their maturity and how fast they were getting into the relationship. That being said, I think it would be interesting to see how each of these characters will grow and develop as individuals in the next book, and I definitely think both Nina and Masen would benefit from really working on themselves and seeing how that influences their relationship as a couple.

Outside of the relationship, the storyline was full of intrigue with many things hinted at that haven't yet been fully explained. It leaves a lot open for the second book and especially when you consider the cliffhanger at the end of Grand Lies. Overall, I think this was a good beginning to the story and I think the next book in the duet will provide a great opportunity for Nina and Mase to really develop themselves and their relationship.

I didn't realize this was a cliffhanger, until it was too late! I was okay with just this one...but now I have too many questions that need answers. A sexy, demanding, CEO type with secrets- go figure. The sympathetic part of me wants to really like Nina, but I really just can't. I was understanding. Until Mason truly opens up to her, and everything is sealed with a kiss, and she turns around and goes right back to her un-trusting, assuming old ways? So she either lied to him or herself when she started respecting and trusting him again. Going right back to her jumping to conclusions ways. I'm not saying he's perfect, but he deserves better than that. I just want to protect Mason. So you better bet I plan on reading Grand Love to do just that!

My Favorite Quotes:
•’You want my manners, I want your taste.’
•”I have an overwhelming need to protect you, Nina, and I won’t apologize for it.”
•”You’ve become the first thing I think about when I wake up and the last thing I think about at night.”
•”Tell me that nobody else gets the parts that I do.”
•”Promise me when I’m sober.”
•”You have to stay. You’re my Pixie.”
•”You know what that smile gets you.”

8/10 Dirty Birdy
7/10 Instalove
8/10 She’s Mine
7/10 The CEO type

Doing a reread ahead of the latest release. This book was good but too long for my liking, especially since a lot of the length was due to repetitive 🔥 scenes. I did really enjoy the cast of characters and the writing was great.

Amazing

This was phenomenal. I can't wait to start reading book two. The characters are amazing. I can't wait to see where it will go in book 2.

Honestly, the only reason I made it through this book was because I was stuck in A&E for 12 hours with only my kindle for company.
