I've had a long, convoluted relationship with the Inheritance Cycle, to grossly oversimplify. Eldest and Brisingr were some of the best fantasy I'd read at that age, and Inheritance was... well, also there. I imagine Paolini has a bag of fantasy cliches that he gives a good shake, and pulls out a few and stitches them together into a story. That being said, the Inheritance Cycle was engrossing, for the most part. This book, on the other hand, was just mind-numbingly dull. I don't fault him for trying to write three short stories capturing vignettes in the life of Alaegesia, if he didn't also try to link every story with multiple references to small events that happened in the original series, and wink-wink at us with each easter egg. And quite frankly, I couldn't see the point to any of the stories, even though the "narrators" within the book promise Eragon (and the reader) that they're are supposed to have a profound impact on him (and therefore us). If I hadn't been so curious about what Eragon has been getting around to after Inheritance, I honestly wouldn't have muddled my way through this.
Couple of positives: The Worm is a good standalone short story, well worth being part of a compendium of fantasy stories.

The three stories weren't anything amazing but I think his writing has improved since the inheritance cycle.

These were fun quick stories though there wasn't much depth to them
