This was really my first foray into poetry outside of what was forced on me in school. And this book was not written for me, and that’s okay. I liked it, even if I didn’t always “get” it. Because of this, I don’t think I can rate it
There were some poems that resonated (“why you cannot touch my hair”), but overall I found this collection hard to get through

Beautiful and interesting, especially if you have any connection to Chicago. “At work with my father” was reminiscent of Robert Hayden’s “Those Winter Sundays” to me, and just as touching. I bookmarked multiple poems as ones I’d love to share with my students.
Moderate: Racial slurs and Racism
Minor: Sexual harassment
