This was a childhood and current favorite, especially after seeing all of those Tumblr posts that just reinvents Amelia Bedlia as a horror-genre I-Can-Read book. In comparison, the original is relatively mild, and filled with wonderful puns and understanding that some words can mean lots of different things--take it from Amelia herself, who dresses the turkey in little overalls, and who dusts the furniture with the matron's dusting powder. There's a lot of double-meanings in this book, and it's just so cute and funny and joyful. I hope that this stays a classic for a very long time.

Oh Amelia and the silliness that happened to you! I loved these books and the stories that happened. Amelia was part of the reason that I learned to read as a child. Thank you for these books.

Literal Amelia gets everything wrong yet it all comes out OK.

Amelia Bedelia is a housekeeper for Mr. and Mrs. Rogers who does exactly what they say, no matter how strange the instructions are. Amelia takes things literally, so when the task is to draw the drapes, she sits down with a pen and paper and does just that. She's well meaning and sweet, so Mr. Rogers keeps her around (mainly for her delicious pies) while both Mr. and Mr.s Rogers adapt to clarify what they mean when they give her daily tasks (close the drapes vs draw the drapes).
What I like about this book for the classroom is students can identify the idioms as an exercise while enjoying the silliness of Amelia. Another thing I love about this book is it highlights language and how it can be misinterpreted by others and how we can reword our words to clarify, something especially necessary in an age of digital communication. It's a light hearted formula that continues throughout the series with Amelia in different scenarios -- a true classic.

This is a hilarious childhood classic! The use of literal speech is very humorous and will make any child giggle! Also shows children an example of literal speech versus what is actually meant.

Silly Amelia, she takes everything so literally it can be annoying. Even as a kid I was annoyed.
