Meh.
With it being long and so much going on, it was incredibly flat, both characters and plot somehow. My favorite character is dead. We'll see if I continue when the next one comes out.

tries to be unique but is like every other "kids with special powers" and "magic school" book

This was surprisingly good, and I’m genuinely excited to read the next. I generally avoid starting trilogies before they’ve been finished but this was worth it. Memorable characters, an engaging and fairly unique plot despite some familiar tropes and very clear writing (which is honestly rare when it comes to anything with a fantasy bent). I actually didn’t want this one to end.

If you liked The Golden Compass series or Penny Dreadful, you’ll probably really enjoy this.

I am really sad, but this book was incredibly.. mid. It's not bad, however, I am left after reading feeling nothing intensely one way or the other. I will say, this could have been trimmed down by about 30%. And I am a fan of very long books normally, but this felt unnecessarily long. I will still pick up the next book in the series once it is out, as I think it has the potential to go somewhere interesting, but we will see.
