The colour palette and illustration style of this book is amazing. A modern retelling of the Greek myths/gods - Hades and Persephone in particular. There are lots of problematic relationships and topics within Greek myths so be wary - the book comes with a reader warning so use caution and self care before reading. As someone who has toxic past relationships I found this manageable and the way the story is told so far is light on detail with these topics. However did struggle close to the end with coersion and assault.

CW sexual violence. LISTEN. If you're into Hades x Persephone lore, this is for YOU. I really like that there is MORE to it than juuuusttt hades x Persephone. More character development, exploring some really dark themes with stunning and vibrant art.

If you get wildly creeped out by the fact that Persephone and her old uncle are a thing like I do... it's NOT going to get any better when you read this. Really, it's not.

That being said, as far as Hades x Persephone stories go, this was great.

I love greek mythology, I love Hades and Persephone and I love graphic novels so I already knew before starting to read this that I would like it.
What I did not know though was that this graphic novel is portraying a lot of heavy topics and that caught me of guard. Especially the rape scene was a lot. But just generally I would not recommend this to everyone for that reason. I do think it was all handled really well and respectfully.
Please do look at the trigger warnings though! Since it is visually portrayed I think it can be especially triggering.

I really enjoyed reading this book though. The drawing style is gorgeous and I felt really immersed in the story. There is great attention to detail and that helps with the main problem I have with graphic novels (them feeling too short and the characters not being flashed out enough).

I am definitely reading the second book as well and I'm really excited for it too. The only reason this isn't a 5 star read for me is that it made me feel bad because of all the darker themes. It is really close though and I might give it 5 stars after a reread in the future.

This was a re read! I read this on WebToon ages ago but I saw there was hard copies and I had to get my hands on it! Love love how beautiful this book is, and the story is so interesting.

I was honestly surprised by how much I liked this. Handles difficult subject matter in a way in which characters behaviors have actual consequences and others call them out on their bullshit.

Disappointed. I picked this up because I recently read and loved graphic novels like Bloom, Heartstopper, and On a Sunbeam. I was hoping for mythology and romance and got absolutely nothing. In over 300 pages nothing is developed, not the plot, and not a single character. It’s confusing and hard to follow at times. There is nothing romantic about this unless you’re a fan of instalove, it’s honestly pretty icky and uncomfortable. I had high hopes for this one but there was absolutely no substance. One redeeming quality is the art style but a lot of the faces look the same and from page to page it’s inconsistent.

Let's start with the positive aspects.
  • The artwork is just stunning.
  • Beside that, the only good thing I can find is the portrayal of Hera. I am used to her being a jealous and crazy wife, so it was nice seeing her as kind of a motherly figure that  has protective feelings towards Persephone and calls men out for their bullshit.

Now onto the negative aspects:
  • So far the plot feels a bit shallow.
  • The infantilization of Persephone. I don't like how Persephone is portrayed as this naive little thing. She is the personification of the No thoughts Head empty meme. I just hate this portrayal in any kind of story.  It's actually driving me insane. Being naive and a damsel in distress is not cute.
  • I was bit uncomfortable concerning the age gap and power imbalance between Hades and Persephone, especially because Persephone is written as a naive and young cinnamon roll
  • Aside from that, the humour wasn't funny. I don't know how to describe it. It's essentially this typical YA humour, that makes me cringe.
  • Everything was just too oversexualized...especially the women in this series. There is in general a heavy focus on sex and at times it felt like it's the only thing that's important. I didn't mind the
    rape scene
since it's true to Greek mythology and it wasn't distasteful in any way. Though it seem like it is used as a plot device for our heroine to be saved by the love interest. I really thought we were over that, but apparently not.

I wanted to continue with this series, but after sitting with my thoughts for a while, I've decided to call it quits. There were just too many flaws.
