I loved this so much! For some reason I didn’t know what to expect going into Lore Olympus but it certainly wasn’t this. It was equal parts hilarious and heartbreaking and I just wanted to eat it all up. The artwork is beautiful and I loved how each character had a unique color that was all their own. And the way the art style shifted for different scenes was so fluid and blended so beautifully together. This is one of the best retellings of Greek mythology that I’ve read in a long time. It doesn’t take itself too seriously and it’s got a lot of fun, silly little scenes. But it’s also got its darker moments too. I loved Hades and Persephone and I can’t wait to see what else this series has in store! Lore Olympus vol 1 is getting five stars.

CW: Greek gods were bad people who did many bad things.

I've seen a number of comic artists returning to the vast well of Greek Myth to retell stories with a personal touch. Smythe's touch is a modern twist surrounding the relationship of Hades and Persephone. I found it very well written with interesting compelling characters that reflect well on their ancient counterparts. No punches are pulled - gods can be very brutal. Even in just this first volume, you clearly see how they easily represent the worst in us. Aphrodite drugs and kidnaps a number of women who she believes challenge her title of the most beautiful. Most of the male gods are characterized as adulterous. Apollo rapes someone.

All of this is the backdrop for the slow burn of Hades and Persephone first meeting and becoming curious about one another.

A fun and fresh spin on the story of Persephone and Hades—I didn’t expect to love it as much as I did, but these characters are so on point, and the modern Olympus VS ancient mortal realm is a great concept for the setting. The art is absolutely gorgeous, which doesn’t hurt. Emphasizes consent, self-reflection and self-awareness, the importance of mental health and therapy, generational trauma, autonomy and choice, very modern and salient themes, without hitting you over the head with them. I’m reading this on WEBTOON, and sometimes the dialogue is riddled with misspellings or grammatical errors, but it’s easy to overlook.
