I really liked this book!
Interesting premise so I'm excited for part 2. The story is very dark and brutal so you should definitely be aware of that! Auren was a great protagonist and a real delight despite her situation.
The world building is amazing and easy to understand!
Spoiler I didn't like how all the girls/ women hated each other when it was really the men who were the problem so I hope that the feminism comes through in the next books.

One thing I would criticize is that I didn't get what the plot of the series is supposed to be, it felt a little random but I guess (and hope) it's gonna get more obvious in the next book.

It’s an interesting take on the story of King Midas. It just took so damn long to pick up. I kept reading strictly because I’ve seen so much hype about this series but I just didn’t get hooked on the story until about 75% of the way through. This is certainly a slow burn with a some world-building sprinkled in. I feel like this book was definitely written with the intention of being a series and does nothing for me other than to set the stage for the heart of the story… which I’m hoping is in book two.

This book was literally just so disgusting. The world building essentially amounted to violence against women.
Spoilerit literally opens with an orgy where the king is fucking his harem, where the women are called saddles. I think that pretty much sums it up

This was good but not as good as it could be? but! I'm writing this after reading all four of the books already out and! the series gets better with the next books! I thought that, overall, this first book more or less acts as one long prologue.

I liked it. It was very gripping, the beginning was a bit slow even though we very much start in medias res. I will say the subjects/themes this book sometimes deals with (mostly women, their rights and the way they're treated) are not for the faint of heart. So please, do check trigger warnings before reading. (I'll try to include a list at the end here)

I loved the complexity, the dichotomy even, of Auren's character. How she's enthralled by Midas, yet also has those deep moments of clarity. She's a very interesting protagonist and a well rounded character. I particularly liked the scene in which
Spoilershe realises that there can be power in sex / playing into men's fantasies by watching Rissa

As a downside, I'm not sure the graphic-ness and violence of certain scenes was entirely necessary. Certain scenes and dialogues made me, figuratively, gag. I understand wanting (needing even?) to shock but the level of details was sometimes harrowing.
SpoilerI'm mostly thinking about the last couple of chapters/scenes, the ones involving the pirate captain.

This book was a mix between loving the writing and the feel of the whole world-building and absolutely hating the characters apart from the poor main character.
Spoiler and sail my poor baby sail 😭
I’m very interested to see where the story will go and how Auren progresses however.
