Anna is different from other amateur sleuths. She takes getting used to but is worth getting to know.

I had to start reading this series of novels about a National Park Service law enforcement officer when I started working for the NPS myself. All of them are great mysteries, interesting characters, amazing settings, and good, quick read. It also gives me a vicarious look into other parks.

I liked this book a bit more than the last few female "detective" books I've read because Anna Pigeon was different enough to keep it interesting. Typically the female detectives blend together in these older works because they are fitting a stereotype, and that gets a little boring after a while. Anna retained the typical cynicism of the genre, but had more depth and cared about things other than herself (her sister, Zach, the environment, animals, friends.) The story was only slow when there was a little too much description of the park, but that isn't necessarily a bad thing. I liked how the story ended, and I was as angry as Anna was with the murderer and his motives. Will continue this series probably.

I chose this book to listen to because I was on a lengthy road trip including many National Parks. I started Track of the Cat as I drove to Guadeloupe Mountains National Park - how perfect. This park is pretty inaccessible except by back county hikes and I didn’t have the time to properly explore. But this mystery did it for me. The sense of place is fantastic. If you’re exploring this region of the country it’s a perfect audiobook companion (and driving to and from GMNP includes a whole lot of vast nothingness so something compelling to listen too is a must).

Nevada Barr books are now pretty retro. Written in the 90s there are no cell phones or other modern contrivances. I loved going back in time a bit.

This is the series you want to read if you’re National Park hopping.

A solid first book in a terrific series. Character introduction is not as solid as the world in which Anna lives, but it's entertaining and edge-of-your-seat at times. I always like to start at the beginning, and while this isn't the best in the series, it's an important one.

National Park Ranger Anna Pigeon is in the desert terrain of Guadalupe Mountains National Park, in rural Texas just south of the New Mexico border, and she's determined to prove everyone's assumptions about recently murdered people are wrong: The mountain lions are innocent.

Every book in this series is set in a different US national park, making these books a great way to virtually visit the parks.
