man this was a lot of fun. I wasn't sure I'd like the book considering I wasn't sold on the premise, but the writing style drew me in and I adored reading about Dani & Carmen + the critique of capitalism and societal structures was fantastic.
Spoilerthe ending, however, hurt me </3

In the beginning, I wasn’t sure if I liked the premise. The story seemed to be moving a little slow even though the pace was quick, and I wasn’t sure if anything new would be offered in the last few chapters. I was wrong. The ending of the book was my favorite part because it pissed me off. I felt emotions that I couldn’t feel in the beginning and middle. This was proof that I had grown attached to these characters- to their story. I’ll be reading the sequel soon.

I thought the premise of this story was really cool and interesting, and I was impressed with the worldbuilding and how La Voz was written, but the book as a whole just did not work for me.

Dani is naive and totally unprepared for the situations she finds herself in. I think this could have worked if it had been the point of the story - that might have been an interesting exploration of morality - but because this is YA, the narrative is on her side at all times. (Not something I fault the genre for, but because Dani is so far out of her depth, it doesn't work well here). I don't mind characters who make bad decisions, but it's really frustrating to watch a character make a bad decision and then have the narrative try to pass it off as totally reasonable. For much of the book I found myself wishing for a more capable protagonist.

 read if you like:
-complex world / political system, polarization, unjust justice system and oppression, gender roles system,  class struggle
-  South American World building!
- complex world BUT we only learn it from the POV of the MC (which could be a problem for some i guess)
- no magic, mention of gods in world building
- very interesting take on marriage and gender roles, but still same old real world sexism and gender roles ( very frustrating for me to read but at least it's written in a bad light)
- imma say it it ends a bit in a emotional cliffhanger which drives me crazy, but it just shows that i really got invested into the story
- young love, but does feel suddenly very intense without the reader being able to relate ( still like the dynamic a lot)
- the poor main character always trying to just survive, she never really has a choice for her actions but I think we gonna see more of that in the second book, hopefully especially with her Primera skills in action, I want to see her to use it more to intimidate people and show of her education instead of pretending to be a worried lil housewife

U want similar reads?

I read three books the last 2-3 weeks, this one, the second mango and Of Fire And Stars / of Ice and Shadows(book1&2).

1)The three books can be described with these tags: fiction fantasy lgbtqia+ (young adult)

2)And they all have a main character that has her life planned for her since the day she was born and  is excelling in completing all expectations ( 2 out of 3 MC at least). The strengths that they all show is with their brains, e.g. political strategist, detective work, spy work, logical thinking and/or education.they are all princesses/high political status.

3)all books invest a big part into a first big wlw romance story-line

read second mango if:
-if you want a short but wholesome read thats not very complex but funnej (could suprise you though with the plot)
-loved that the world building setting is around Jewish believes and culture
-the main character is basically a Useless Lesbian(TM).I love to see it, this awkward s*xual frustration (but no strong words / descriptions used, still fine for young people I'd say)
-it's definitely for "a lil older" young audience
-magical world setting but less focus to describe magical rules
- reads like a lil funnej little dnd one-shot

read of Fire and Stars if:
- read this one if you enjoy young love, teenage emotions/drama , horses ( first book not the second), political schemes and tiny bits of war
- it gets a lil dark but not like psychologically dark dark
- POV switches between the two love birds which i like
-second book makes great magical world building and shows the culture shock you can get when you come into a new culture as a stranger
- climaxes of the plot , really not that satisfying , too little invested into them especially the ending, but it can still be a nice read
- you can handle that the love birds will be separated for a long time for plot/ character development , and some situations definitely feel staged
- interesting characters with contradicting sides, but also very obvious clear roles ( which is fine but might feel shallow sometimes)
