Excellent Historical Fiction with Heart

I need more historical graphic novels like this in my life. I loved getting to know Soupy and, like her, getting a glimpse into hobo life during the Great Depression. The story and whimsical art transports readers whether it's to the side of the tracks getting ready to jump into a boxcar or deep in the woods eating Mulligan Stew at hobo camp. This is a great read.

A cool dive into a culture I don’t know much about.

Cute graphic novel about hobo culture in the 1930s and societal pressure for females. I enjoyed the hobo law and the inclusion of the signs they used to mark areas and communicate.

Spectacular. Found myself openly crying at least twice. An important story of a bygone age that resonates today.

A very good tale of a young woman fleeing an abusive past to try and find her way. Great storytelling and a beautiful use of color.

This YA graphic novel is going to be a hard sell. I mean, even the name, Soupy. I know right? It gets worse. Hey, kids read this graphic novel about a girl named Soupy who becomes a train hopping hobo during the depression! The art work is pretty forgettable and the Depression era hobo life overly romanticized.
It isn't all terrible. Graphic novels of young women coming of age can be a powerful punch, and Soupy is enjoyable to watch come into her own. And while I didn't love the setting as much I did like the dreaminess of the tone. The characters were allowed to explore their hopeful imaginations, something that doesn't happen enough in fiction. I also read this entirely during my lunch hour, so there is that.
This was decent, but I'd be hard pressed to suggest this over Honor Girl, Friends with Boys, Shoplifter, or Re-Gifters.
