Great Story

I found Cameron Chaney by watching his YouTube videos where he discusses horror books and the occasional movie. I have a lot of fun watching his videos so I thought it was time to read his novella.

I wasn’t disappointed. At all. I was, in fact, surprised. The basic premise is a family that is cursed with seeing monsters that haunt them individually. What There Are Monsters Here does is capture real life horrors of abuse, alcoholism, and mental illness and give it a monster’s face. These two elements, real life verses the fantastic, blend well together where the protagonist is forced to face his demons in a life or death battle. It’s very aware of what it’s trying to accomplish and I think that it does so very well.

I recommend reading There Are Monsters Here. It’s very short and very good!

I thought his short novella was good as this author's first publication. It had some vivid imagery that could classify this as a tale of horror. The story can be interpreted in different ways though. It seems to me that it can be about "real" monsters and also about the things, the so-called monsters in our life that we hang on to. A quick entertaining read.

you know when you go out in winter alone, head for a high hill and sit there, hiding inside your heavy coat, breathing the universe, the black skies, the far lights of human lives going about with all their happiness and sadness and madness .
remembering the happy moments and the sad ones in your life and feeling them so close, so close like you can touch them, like some monster inside you is giving you a power of feelings and knowledge that you don't even want, forcing you to feel yourself flying and falling at the same time?.
well, that's what this novella gave me .
i was twenty-four and i actually was depressed.
in my head i saw black monsters feeding of every happy feeling i had, watching me, invading my dreams . most of the time it felt like they made me see other people's darkness, and it was hell!!. i had so many strange dreams, and tried to fight that feeling for a long time. then started writing furiously, forcing them out of my head and into the paper ( and still do actually ).
when i started reading this i saw that again in every sentence. this novella deals with the most horrifying demons ever; the shadows in our minds that watch us from behind the curtains of sanity!!.
i love psychological novels, i love horror, and i love how as simple as this book was. it had so so many layers in it. did the writer mean to put them there or was it just me and my weird mind and my own monsters that connected with the novella ?. i don't know, but it was smart, and it was amazing and i loved it .
" I guess if monsters go anywhere when we can’t see them, they go home. "
and guess where that home is ? :)
i gave it 4.5 stars cuz i needed to read more of this. this needed to be a whole chunky novel .

A good dark little story

If you like dark stories, ones that make you think a little, this is a good read. There were a few stumbling moments that I had to reread and I was disappointed with the the supposed setting, there was little to show for the location. But, the climax of the story was great, really throws you back and forth figuring it out. I am still trying to figure out what really happened (not a bad thing). Overall, great start for the author!

This was a really quick read as it was only a 53 page long novella, but boooooy did it pack a punch.
There Are Mosnsters Here follows a family who all see strange "monsters". Only the individual can see their monster, and cannot see anyone else in the family's monster.
There is no explanation as to what these monsters are and why this family can see them, but that just adds to the mysterious feeling within the book.
This novella had exactly the right amount of creepiness that I always look for in horror-type books. I read it really quickly as it was so captivating and luring.
Even though the story is short, you get an understanding of each character and their personalities. Everything is written in such a tragically romanic way that it grips your heart and makes you hungry to find out what happens next.
If you're looking for a quick spooky read, this will definitely do the trick!

Well I wasn't expecting to feel FEELINGS while reading this, but I sure did. The writing is wonderfully evocative and immersive. The story is sublime, and I do mean that in the gothic sense. It's at once creepy and real. Your heart might break a little bit, but it's worth it in the end.

(4.5) Stars. It reminded me a A Monsters Calls by Patrick Ness. It hit me me just the same. It was a great quick read.
