I love the subtle evolution of Zare's doubt concerning the empire. It was really well done.

Okay so first I want to say I’m aware that I’m not really the target audience for this book and I do think it would be a great book for its age range. However. Honestly. The reason I disliked this book and honestly this series so much… the cross hatching pattern on the pages. It was so distracting and really made it difficult to read at the speed I’m used to. I really couldn’t get into this one

This was much better than I anticipated. Also it is very relevant to issues facing our society today. Such as bias in media, racism, oppression, and how those being oppressed don't even always know they /are/ being oppressed.

Written for younger readers, this book provides enough backstory to keep anyone a fan of Rebels engaged. Hopefully the story arc presented will be continued.

Great introduction to this era in the Star Wars universe (between movie III and movie IV) from the side of people who still believe the Empire is there to help. Looking forward to reading more of these.

Too much of a sports focus

Overall the storyline is good. It follows Zare's life before the academy but it spends far too much time talking about the sport Grav-ball. Too much play by play that does nothing to progress the main storyline nor add any emotion for the reader.

Although it was a junior reader book, I still found it interesting. The set up seemed to introduce lots of new characters. There was way too much sports talk for my liking.
There was an excellent level of character development that didn't develop too fast. The pacing was perfect, and I liked how Jason Fry tackled the topic of racism.
Overall a good book.

This story follows Zare Leonis, who is a character that originated in the Star Wars: Rebels series, and though his story is lightly touched upon, we never see the resolution to his story. This series of books is looking to change that.
I find it really interesting so far, and I'm assuming it only gets more interesting from here. I like Zare a lot, and this will make me look differently at him whenever I see his Rebels episodes again.
