A fun take on one of the sisters from Pride & Prejudice who didn't get much attention or love in that book. Cowley's enthusiasm for Jane Austen shines through in this admirable imitation of Austen's style, mixed with a dash of Sherlock Holmes. A light, enjoyable read.

Somehow this book managed to have a murder mystery, the most obvious spy ring in history, and not a single likeable character. I'm all for books exploring more of Mary's character, but in this one she doubled down on everything that made her annoying in P&P and only had the realization of "maybe the problem is me" in the last few chapters. She was so bad at people that I thought maybe the author was trying to portray her as being on the spectrum, which honestly would have been more interesting than anything else that was going on. Of all the characters, Kitty probably came out the best for the few paragraphs she appeared in the story.
If you're looking a good variation where Mary gets to stretch her metaphorical wings and pursue her own interests out from underneath the shadow of her siblings and mother, I would really recommend the series by Joyce Harmon.

I'm so onboard for Mary Bennet being a spy! It's always the quiet ones like The Wallflower in Gail Carriger's books. 4 Stars because it was a little slow in the middle. There was a lot to set up but worth it for the Ending. I look forward to the next book.
Audiobook Note: This is not a critique of Book or Author strictly the Narrator. She mispronounced Maria Lucas's name repeatedly. I looked her up. She done a ton of Austen. She should know better. Fortunately Maria only features in a few scenes. And after the first one I had switched to Kindle.

I wanted to like this one, I really did! But, it was just so...dull. I missed the humor that is in the original P&P. Overall I was just not happy with it.

I absolutely loved this book. It is a continuation of Pride and Prejudice that focuses on Mary Bennet as she tries to unravel a treasonous plot that may involve her mysterious new benefactors.
