I don’t know exactly what draws me to Junji Ito’s artwork and stories. They are so uniquely creepy and enthralling. This one was not a collection but instead one long story and it doesn’t disappoint. It was consistent at keeping my attention, lots of bizarre imagery, and leaned a lot more to Giger-esque bio-mechanical horror. Loved it.

honestly this was probably going to be closer to a 4.5 for me, but they slipped in the enigma of amigara fault at the end and i am quite frankly obsessed with that story sgdjbd

Some initial thoughts:
1. Never turn this into a 4DX movie.
2. Someone check up on Junji Ito.

This was a birthday gift from my mom and I don't know how she accidentally picked up the manga that explored some of my greatest icks/fears: fish, rotten things and bad smells.
Junji Ito's art is objectively great, however I feel like the same can't be said for its characters on Gyo. Both them and the story felt one-dimensional and I was expecting a bit more development, specifically on the biological explanation of all these events that's introduced very late in the story (and I mean last chapter late). The grotesque nausea-inducing art carried the story, what was reflected on an ending that lacked closure, which made me wish for a sequel.

The first short story felt incomplete to me, but maybe that was the point.
On the other hand, I really enjoyed the last short story and I think it was very well written.

Overall, 3 stars. Loved the art, though.
