Eddie Jaku touchingly recounts his tale of surviving the Holocaust. He manages to give a positive spin to the story through his focus on the help he received from others and the relationships that carried him through. Still, the story is filled with brutality and inhumane treatment. It’s a book we can all learn from.

A witness testimony that really touched me. The stories about what happened to Eddie really struck me, as I could try to imagine them. They were ‘easier’ to try to imagine, than some other witness stories. For example the story about the nights in the barracks, while it was freezing, where the people on the outside had to swap places with the ones on the inside to not freeze to death. The way the author describes everything, and really takes you on a tour around his life and everything that happened… I don’t know, but it hit me hard. And even though the stories are horrendous and unimaginable, and you can feel the despair and sorrow behind every word… the hope at the end is so present during it all. It really makes you rethink your life and let’s you reflect on your life in this society. And while I must admit that I am not that hopeful for the future to come, I am hopeful that I can change my life and that of my family and friends for the better by loving them and being loved in return. 

Thank you, Eddie, for sharing your experiences with the world. And for trying to explain what happened, so we can try our best to not let hate and inhumanity take over again.
