The comparison many have made to Shirley Jackson is apt. Reminded me very much of We Have Always Lived in the Castle.

I struggled a bit with the switching of narrators, found myself trying to place who was speaking. As with many books I read, this one picked up at the end and was the most enthralling section.

Definitely a good choice for spooky season, which was why I picked it from my to read shelf.

I'm reviewing the first 79 pages of this book because that's where I finally gave up on this dull, dull story. I really disliked the style this book was written in. It's intentionally obscure and prose-like. More like a long poem than a novel. If you're into that kind of thing, you may like it. I didn't care about any of the characters, had no real idea what was happening at any given moment and basically just found it all incredibly tedious and pretentious.

I liked this but I am so full of dread! The last third of the book whizzed by because everything was so wrong and weird and horrible.

Parts of this book were spectacular. The writing was beautiful. I loved Ore and Miranda. I hated the twins' father - not sure if you're supposed to like him or not? I got lost a few times when it would suddenly switch perspectives and it was sometimes murky on who was saying what, what was actually happening, and what was being imagined/dreamt.

3.5 stars!
