Third book of this series and the story is moving right along. I enjoy the characters and the situations are interesting. Will be fun to continue the series and see where the author takes it with a few of the characters.

Yet another galloping adventure with space-faring trader cum privateer (kind of like a pirate employed by a government) Ky Vatta. There was a lot going on in this one - we shift between Ky and her cousin Stella aboard another ship, and Ky is busily trying to raise defences against pirates and irritating entire planets in the process. This creates a great deal of tension between her and Stella, which is resolved in a realistic way. There was a cool battle near the end, and Ky is becoming more believable as someone who is very competent at warfare - I'm looking forward to the next book where I imagine her fight will begin in earnest. Yay for battles in space.

Another gripping entry in Ky Vatta's adventures! This time,
the girls are fighting
. Ky continues to juggle her ambitions, family duties, and internal turmoil, while Stella reassess what she knows of Ky. An old woman with fruitcakes menaces from a distance.

I appreciate that characters continue to make mistakes and grapple with those decisions in hindsight. While supporting characters receive less attention and personality than last book, I appreciate the author's difficult job as we meet more and more new characters in the universe.

I was a bit disappointed that
Ky and Stella's interpersonal conflict
became such a major part of this book, considering where things were left in the previous installment. I also resented that
at least some of it seemed to be about a boy
. (There's a war on! We have bigger fish to fry.)

Something I've found with this series that's only getting more noticeable as I read further is the strange pacing. It's getting to the point that I'm honestly enjoying the books less and less as I go. Still entertaining and definitely glad I read it, but definitely a step down from the first two.

This installment suffers from middle book syndrome. The primary conflict is between Ky and her cousin Stella, except for a hasty and somewhat disconnected ending sequence, and considering they’re in the midst of a family emergency and war their problems seem very juvenile, particularly on Stella’s part. Stella displays an incredible lack of maturity, foresight, and understanding for the majority of the book, which is very frustrating to read. As far as I can tell, this book mostly serves as a building block in an otherwise excellent series.

9/19/22 reread:

Can still be summarized as “Stella being a brat.”
