I thought I could nott relate to her meltfown created from abandonment, but it was written so realistically that I could relate to the main character. A really tough read.

i've been reading this book over the course of a week and i have grown terribly attached to the main character. this book actually does justice to the hype around elena ferrante and i'm so stoked to check out her other works!!!
"the days of abandonment" was perfect for me from every angle because i genuinely had fun studying the many shades and nuances of olga's personality. the way she deals with loss, anxiety and insanity is so vividly portrayed that i even though i hated her decisions i couldn't bring myself to hate olga herself. through olga's story, elena ferrante has masterfully touched on the human dilemmas of estrangement, unreality and denial. the writing is top tier and it was layered with so many 10/10 truth bombs that had me gasping for air.
exhibit a: "a woman can easily kill on the street, in the middle of a crowd, she can do it more easily than a man. her violence seems a game, a parody, an improper and slightly ridiculous use of the male intent to do harm."
exhibit b: "speak like what? i don't give a shit about prissiness. you wounded me, you are destroying me, and i'm supposed to speak like a good, well brought up wife?"
ALSO the critical take on motherhood was wonderful to read because, it's true, the concept of "the joys of motherhood" is actually a social construct. also i loved the wicked humor and the commentary on marriage and romantic relationships!!!!
i love u elena ferrante u r my god

"What a mistake, above all, it had been to believe that I couldn't live without him, when for a long time I had not been at all certain that I was alive with him."

"How much of him would I be forced to love forever, without even realizing it, simply by virtue of the fact that I loved them? What a complex foamy mixture a couple is. Even if the relationship shatters and ends, it continues to acct in secret pathwys, it doesn't die, it doesn't want to die."

"The whole future-I thought-will be that way, life lives together with the damp odor of the land of the dead, attention with inattention, passionate leaps of the heart along with abrupt losses of meaning. But it won't be worse than the past."
