it started off strong then just got meh. the chapters were so long and just some of it was so predictable and drawn out like let me have some of the guesswork here.

In Pieces of Her, the reader follows the life of a thirty-something woman, Andy, living with her mother, Laura, in a small and quiet community until they both experience a traumatic event while in a restaurant.  (content warning: gun violence).  During an active shooting event, Andrea sees another side of her mother and becomes the center of a national news event.  As she flees and tries to stay safe, she pieces together who her mother was in her past.

The story unfolds through clues and small snippets of information along the way, however as a reader it seemed fairly clear what was happening early on and the pieces of information along the way didn’t build a puzzle for me.  Instead, they added more trauma and detail to what already seemed spelled out.  Watching Andy make poor decisions and be so slow to understand what was happening around her was at times frustrating and made the stories go by slowly.  Perhaps it was that the author packed so many things into one person’s life story or perhaps it was that she used serious topics like the predatory nature of some healthcare companies or violence in cults as points in the mystery without giving proper depth to their reality.

I understand this will become a Netflix 8-part series and I think the pace could be better in television.  I can’t say I’ll be tuning in unless it is done quite differently than the book.  The idea was intriguing however the execution wasn’t captivating.

Overall this book was pretty good. I liked the back and forth between Laura and Andy's chapters. It really helped you understand the whole story.
It was the cult aspect that kinda lost me. I definitely see how Nick persuaded them, it just seemed to be a little odd. I don't understand what his true motivations behind it were. I guess to control people
This book really was a wild ride. I wasn't expecting a lot of what happened but it was pieced together really nicely.

I felt so bad for Laura. It seems like she went from one bad relationship to another.
I was absolutely floored by the fact that those pictures were actually Nicks doing
I was so happy to see her stand up for herself and then you got to see Andy do the same.

One of my favorite things about reading is being pulled into a story, so completely that you forget about the world going on around you. Its my escape from reality.
Karin Slaughter is a damn queen. She is in a league all her own with her story telling capabilities, and the way she grabs you so fiercely from the first few pages and doesn't let go until you are left gasping for air after you've read the last word.
There were several parts in this book that I actually stopped breathing. Holding my breath as I was trying to read faster to get over that precipice, but I'd just find myself climbing higher up that mountain.

This is only my third KS book and I am here for everything.  Every brutal moment, every tender one. Every middle finger in the air, you can't touch me anymore moment.
