I didn't have high hopes reading the summary when I started this book but I was shocked to find myself enthralled within an hour of reading. The development of the slow-burn suspense, along with the intensity of the individual character development made it impossible to put down. The only concern I had was with the semi-graphic description of the rape; while it made the situation emotive + unfortunately very relatable to the audience; it was a bit triggering content-wise. While evoking emotion is one of the wonderful things well-written books were meant to do, it felt like there could've been a little bit more lead-up to allow the reader to mentally prepare for the character's experience. It also felt a bit rushed resolution-wise, as 5/6 of the book was developing the initial plot lines and then the end came off as a bit of a tell-all instead of show. Overall, this book was an unexpected delight! Reading suspense genre consistently can make it hard to feel surprised plot-wise, but this delivered in spades! I absolutely recommend it and look forward to reading more Douglas!

A strong start, a dull middle, and a complete let down of a finish. I think about 20% of the way into this, you can work out what's likely to be the "twist" ending and getting there takes much longer than the few days that the events of this book cover. There was an interesting bit of potential here to explore female friendships, their ups and downs, and the jealousy inherent in someone who is better off, has loving parents, or is the more conventionally attractive in a small town, but it's all a bit of a wash, I'm afraid. Disappointing.

I kept hearing that this book was super good but honestly it was just okay to me. I thought there were a lot of characters and the duel timeline was pretty boring. None of the characters were likeable but I do think the ending had a good twist
