This book is a collection of cases a female barrister worked on in criminal and family courts. I found it informative as it looked at the details of these environments through a range of cases that whilst they might not be the biggest cases to happen in the UK, they still helped me to understand more about the criminal justice system and change their perspective on some of the events.

Compelling and insightful. Langford uses 11 case studies to write about a steadfast belief in the justice system, and yet the book never feels like a lecture. I enjoyed the window into the unpredictable and chaotic world of being a barrister. Langford offers praise and critique for her job equally, centred entirely around the people it impacts. In this way, In Your Defence gives power to the voices of the people who are caught up in our legal system - those there through their own fault, and those forced into situations they never imagined would touch them. I loved Langford's voice, and the journey she went on while reflecting on and sharing these examples. A fantastic read, told by a woman whose sense of self was inspiring.
