This book was a miss for me. While I find KJ Charles to be a really talented writer, the dynamic between Archie and Daniel was dysfunctional at best and toxic at worst. Even though Archie chooses Daniel at the end, it feels reluctant given his hostility throughout the early book. Even more than hostility, his overt homophobia, racism and anti-Semitism make him pretty irredeemable to me. Learning the errors of his ways does not absolve him of being a straight up jerk to his love interest.

really liked this! like with proper english, i'm not normally a fan of murder mystery (and i did find this one a bit graphic despite the content warnings provided on storygraph), however this one had some really interesting conversations in it about queer identity in the early 20th century, and disability in the post-WW1 period. also i thought the main couple had great chemistry.

After I learned that
DS from The Will Darling Adventures had his own book
I knew I had to read it. But even tho it's not directly connected it was a great story on its own.

Well this was an entertaining read, and much more action packed and violent than I thought it would be going off of my experience of the Proper English prequel. I will say I really liked Daniel and Archie as a couple, and I'm always down for a swoon-worthy rescue. It's a quick read, and it's all about rich people getting their comeuppance and that's, like, a real comfort read right now.

I also think it's very funny that Pat and Fen show up in what is their second house party where murder occurs and they must save the day for the gay men they find in their lives.

I would have liked there to be a more critical lens of Empire (Archie was a soldier during the Boer War), but it wasn't like a rah-rah British Imperialism book, so I don't consider it to be a damning feature of the book.  I also have mixed feelings about how Archie's disability is handled in text. But again, I didn't find it egregiously terrible.
