A decent 4/5, especially considering that this book was published in 1984 and helped establish Cyberpunk as a genre.

Maybe not great to read as an audiobook because it was very hard to follow such a complex world, with characters who pop up in physical form or in the matrix or as other characters used for communication. It would probably be slightly easier to follow names, being jacked in or out etc on a hard copy.

As this was my first science Fiktion book, it was hard for me to get behind some concepts. Some time skins felt a bit weird and sometimes I didn't really know whom I was following through the story.

this was a bookclub read and it was soo hard to get through.
though I generally liked the idea of the book and its story and how it paved some of the way for the sci-fi/cyberpunk genre, it just was so confusing and tedious for me to get through.
it took more than half of the book to get me really hooked and I'm just glad it's over.

Extremely challenging book, that was very clearly a visionary example for its time. I will be unpacking and re-reading this for years to come, I can already tell.

Books like this don’t come along often.

So I’m at the end of my journey with Neuromancer, and oh boy did it take me a long time to get through it. Gibson’s writing style threw me for a loop, he takes little time to spell things out to you- learning his technology and concepts is mostly the result of inference. At the start of the novel, I was lost, and I don’t know what changed, but as I went through the story, it all gradually started to make sense.

I feel like the conflict of self interest vs human connection comes up a whole lot, and watching Case connect with his humanity across the course of the mission (especially after the loss of Armitage) and watching Molly slowly grow comfortable enough to reveal pieces of her past really did give a warmth to the cold cyberpunk setting.

I feel what didn’t fully connect for me was that Case seems to revert despite what he goes through. Sure, he learns about himself but it feels to me he ends up right where he started, with the same addictions and vices. It’s a sad ending and ultimately it’s not what I wanted for him, but it matches the tone of what is ultimately a very dystopian novel.

Altogether, this wasn’t a totally natural read for me, but I appreciate that it is fantastically constructed, and what it did for the genre is unmistakably magnificent.

The plot was a little fuzzy at times during reading, but overall clear.
