Autumn is third in line to lead one of the four major crime families and has just been sent on her first solo mission—which is complicated when she develops feelings for her target, Kato.

This one seemed like a super fun premise and a quick read, and overall I’m glad I gave it a try. For a short book, I thought there were a few slow points in the plot, but the ending picked up quite a bit. I was genuinely surprised by the twist and really enjoyed the way the book ended—I will definitely be picking up the sequel whenever we get one (and we’d better!!!)

The setting in this—a lake retreat in Wisconsin—was also really great and the descriptions of the lakes and natural scenery really added to the story. I wouldn’t have anticipated rural Wisconsin as a place to set what is, essentially, a YA mafia romance, but I really appreciated the choice by the end!

Overall, if you want a quick but twisty YA spy thriller, check this one out.

Recommended if you like: mafia romance (but make it YA); rural settings; twists and cliffhanger endings

CW: Blood/injury/death/violence, including gun violence
