a book about “women’s desire” that centers on the men in these women’s lives and THEIR desires. i was sooooooooo disappointed by this. how can u include 2 literal victims in it, write the graphic scenes of what happened to them, and be like no no this is about WOMEN and THEIR desires. it felt like the author used her mom’s story and the story of these women as trauma porn instead of actually writing anything meaningful. she should’ve just interviewed men like she had initially wanted to.

I'm disappointed because the description left me wanting more than what I'd read. Actual representation of the diversity of women's desire. Much more of a focus on trauma, not much analysis or commentary? No sense of closure or reflection on the parts of the main women?

Didn’t love it, I feel like I’ve read stronger narratives that hit the same themes, but it was interesting to compare the three stories and see how gender punishes women in different ways than the men, who seem to not take accountability for the ways they transgress women interpersonally and systemically.

I have mixed feelings on this one.
The author shares the stories of three women and the details of their relationships with significant men in their lives.  All three stories were engaging and intriguing.  However, they seemed a bit imbalanced to me because Maggie's story (that of a teen who becomes involved with her teacher) could've been a book of its own.  While all the stories were emotional, that one just felt much heavier than the others.

Most of the book is written in straightforward prose that allows for smooth reading, but every now and then, the author hits you with a simile  thrown in that feels forced and takes you out of the book.

I also would've appreciated it if the author had chosen a more diverse group of women.  Perhaps this book concept could be extended into a series that includes some women of color.
