this was just crazy. I was mostly on board and had some laughs until the last 30 pages when things fell apart and the narrator really went off the deep end. it just ended up feeling sad instead of oddball funny.

I loved this book.
I kept thinking, ugh I bet there's some sort of redemption coming or she goes to jail, but it never happens. Thank god for a book that shows that some people are just irredeemably terrible.
Ridiculous madness for the win!

I forgot I read this several years back until I came across something today that reminded me about it. I think I had repressed it because I hated it so much. My problem isn't a supposedly unlikable narrator/protagonist. My problem is just *how* deplorable and irredeemable she was and how unpleasant the experience of spending time in the orbit of her narrative was. The fact that I finished it is shocking to me and now I can only remember snippets but I just recall an overall ick feeling.

Deeply weird and darkly funny, I raced through this in a day as our deeply unlikeable main character spiraled into bad decision after bad decision, led by her obsession with Treasure Island. I get why this won't be everyone's cup of tea but I liked how the book started off over the top and quite funny but descended into something much darker and sadder.
