Introduction to Kate and Mutt. A must read as one starts the series.

I enjoyed reading this mystery.  This is the first book in a long running series. Kate has left the big city and returned to the wilds of Alaska.  When two rangers disappear Kate is asked to investigate.  The author does a wonderful job with the Alaska background.  The characters include local natives and developers hoping to get rich.  I really liked the Alaska setting and the wonderful characters.  The mystery was good with lots of suspects and twists and turns. The solution made sense.  I look for word to reading more in this series. Enjoy

I have never read anything by this author before. It was a slow start but once you get into it it is very good.

The style was initially a little off-putting but all in all I found the book gripping and thoroughly enjoyed it. Stabenow has a new fan.

I was excited by the premise and enjoyed the first few chapters with description of the homestead and the Park. But very quickly the characters started to feel like caricatures and the story felt flat.

Kind of torn on this one.

So much I liked (the characters, the scenes, the setting (Alaskan wilderness)) but yet so much that was just average. I don't like to be told things, I like to be shown them and Dana Stabenow just spent so much time describing Alaska & the native Alaskans instead of using her words to show me what it was like.

Wasn't really a mystery either. She spend 90% of the books searching for missing people and then in 5 minutes figured it out but didn't provide the reader with any clues so that we might try to figure it out ourselves.

Probably a 3.5 but Goodreads doesn't do half stars

Excellent mystery set in Alaska. Great sense of place and appealing, if not always virtuous, characters.

I took me a little bit to get into the story and into the characters but by the end of the book both had grown on me. I think I will continue with this series.

The tension is light in this book so there's little suspense but the ending is rough for the main character. The characters are also complex and diverse.
