What can a friendship or relationship be when not defined by traditional values? I really enjoyed this story

Oh how I wanted to hug Frances at times.

I don't mind that the story wasn't fully resolved or had a happy ending but I was left with a feeling of concern for Frances, wanting to help her and hoping someone would.

I love sally Rooney. This is a slow character driving analysis on the complexity of human relationships, such as friendship and monogamy. Also, she discusses how we wish to be perceived by others. The characters are all messy and imperfect, which makes the story feel very life like.

Lots of aesthetic with not much substance.

The pretentiousness of the author stating she “doesn’t see the need for quotation marks” and “doesn’t understand the role they play” in novels should tell you alot. Don’t even get me started on how she tackles themes of Marxism and feminism.

I was ultimately left with the question “what was the point??????”

Frances’ ramblings at the end when her life goes to shit just becomes garbled nonsense (what the hell was that last email she sent Bobbi?). The only reason its not one star is because I was captivated enough to read it to the end…okay maybe the end was a bit of hate reading.

I’m going to try one other Rooney novel before writing her off as NOT THE AUTHOR FOR ME THANKS.

This was fairly enjoyable! Although it was very out of my normal reading genre, it surprised me by how much I enjoyed it. Frances wasn't necessarily a great person, but her character was complicated and felt very real. Nick was the worst part of this book for me, and I did not enjoy his presence. The concept of the novel was very simple, but Rooney was able to make it into something deep and dynamic.

Really enjoyed the narrative voice but wasn’t as interested in the plot as I thought I would be. It’s a somewhat frustrating book to read because of the decisions the characters take, or the things that they don’t say to one another. But it felt really real and human and sad.
