The prose is really beautiful and the set-up promising. Unfortunately we spend more time with the protagonists friend group and their fucked-up dynamic than with the actual haunting, so that it takes away all the horror from this horror book.

Nothing wrong with the book, I just wanted more. It started in media res and we didn't get a lot more detail. Overall, felt it moved too fast.

The idea is creepy and awesome, but the author isn't quite able to follow through with that idea.

Despite the short length, this book requires a slow, careful read. The Japanese folklore and yokai presented, and the visual descriptions require patience and understanding, and each sentence should be read carefully. This is not a 'standard' haunted house story, one that would be presented by a white author with western views and ideas of horror. It requires an active imagination and the consent to let the visuals run their course through your brain, not for you to force your own ideas into it.

I knew very little about Japanese terminology going into this book, but that absolutely did not take away the creepiness of this book! If anything, it added to it. This was everything I could have asked for in a Horror novella.

I received an e galley from Netgalley in exchange for an honest review.
I don't think I had the right expectations for this story and that's on me.
The actual atmosphere was great. I love atmospheric horror. The rest of it didn't resonate. I can see why people enjoy it, though. Would absolutely read work by this author again.
Three stars.

Why is this even in the horror genre? Just a story about a ridiculously immature group of friends that happen to go to a “haunted” mansion. The spirit was probably just as annoyed as I was with them.

well that was weird and spooky and probably way better if you know anything about Japenese folklore and myths and ghost stories
The main character is a depressed and honestly kinda messed up bisexual woman so at least there's some queer rep because she randomly talked about kissing girls
but really this is just a pack of rich friends that don't really like each other all together at some random mansion for one of their weddings but shit hits the fan because the mansion is haunted, as we could all tell, and one of them dies
