I wish I could give this book more than five stars. I loved it so much.

This is a big book, both in length and scope, but it was one that didn't feel that long to me because I sped through it. I loved Marion as a character, and I loved learning every detail of her life, even from before she was born. I enjoyed Hadley less and really only enjoyed her parts of the story insofar as they furthered my understanding of Marion, so her story line was mostly a plot device to me. I know some friends who have read this book who felt that Hadley ruined the book for them; I didn't care much for her, but I understood her role in the book as a way for us, as readers, to discover Marion as a (fictional, obviously) person and not just as a historical figure in the world of the novel.

I really struggled with rating this book 4 or 5 stars, so in the end I split the difference. It's not a book that's for everyone, and you certainly need to be willing to make the commitment to reading a 700+-page book, but I will say that I cried a little at the end, and I don't think that was so much because the book moved me but because I was sorry to have to say goodbye to a character I so enjoyed.
