Too philosophical for my taste.

Having read a number of King’s books, and on the recommendation of several friends, I decided it was finally time to embark on The Dark Tower series.

The setting and tone were very different from King’s other works that I’ve read. The Wild West “world” made for a stark contrast to his usual New England setting, and made for an intriguing background.

Unfortunately I did find the story itself dragged a little and the pacing was a bit slow at times. This definitely reads as a book which is part of a saga - there isn’t much plot progression throughout the book.

I will persevere with the series to see how things progress.

For whatever reason, it took about 5 tries to get into this book over the past ten years. But this time it took. I loved it! It’s engaging and engrossing, with a fantastical, weird western quality. I’ll try The Drawing Of the Three soon!

well, it's an intriguing beginning to a long series. not much really happens in this book, but i am interested to see where it all leads. onto book #2!

Burned through this. Almost forgotten how much I missed worldbuilding and other fantasy trappings.

Not the biggest fan of the horniness here with Allie, the succubus and Sylvia Pittson, it all seemed a bit gratuitous.

Huge Stephen King fan, I tried reading this twice before but just couldn't get into it. Is third time the charm?
No, third time was not the charm, although I did finish this time, it was a struggle. This felt exactly what it was, a series of short stories crushed together. I didn't understand the ending at all.
The people giving this 4 or 5 stars I think are more reviewing The Dark Tower as a whole rather than this one on its own. I am assured it gets better from book 2, although on the strength of the first one my expectations have been set pretty low. Can't bring myself to start book 2 quite yet though.

Hard to get into at first, but as soon as I did (around 60 pages or so) I couldn't put it down! I can't wait to pick up Dark Tower #2!
