Contained, interesting story. Characters are hard to relate to and speak truths without being challenged. Ending was a bit odd and annoying.

Incredibly sad, as perhaps to be expected. I love Philippe Besson's writing, but this took a while to get going. I think it got much better in Books 2 & 3, and I was not expecting the final revelation. Made me cry, made me think, made me feel. Poignant and reflective.

'When one is sixteen, one is always right. What matters if what one believes at sixteen is true or not. What one believes when one is sixteen is more powerful than any truth.'

the flowery narrative style of this book made it hard for me to get into initially and i kept picking it up and putting it back down before i committed to finishing it. this book is composed of three parts and the middle one, which is made up of letters between the three central characters, was the one i found most compelling as a letter writing enthusiast. i enjoyed arthurs storyline and found it much more engrossing than marcels
