Wattpad writers are getting too bold these days. 

A five star reading experience in a point five star book though. I don’t think I’ve ever laughed so much.

The schizophrenia/psychosis in this book is handled with about as much care as your bags on Delta Airlines. Corvina's schizophrenia is almost always romanticized in some way (usually in the "maybe she has these hallucinations because she's so witchy and intuitive" way) and Vad is constantly making remarks about being her madness or whatever. Neither Corvina nor her mother have any symptoms of schizophrenia other than hallucinations, presumably because either the author did no research or because the other schizophrenia symptoms aren't very cool and mysterious. All this while also demonizing schizophrenia -- while

Corvina's mother is portrayed as mom of the year for the most part in spite of her schizophrenia and psychosis and never poses a threat towards Corvina or herself or anyone, Corvina's choice to institutionalize her mother is portrayed as the "right" choice. Presumably because schizophrenia is just such a scary mental illness while also being what makes Corvina so cool and mysterious.

I got an ARC for this book. It was advertised as dark academia with some romance and a bit of a murder mystery plot throw in. This is a goddamn lie and I’m gonna fight whoever at Bramble is responsible for this absolute garbage fire of a book being published. There is almost no plot until over 75% of the way through, exactly zero of the characters have any semblance of a personality, the romantic couple had no chemistry but everyone around them constantly talked about how much fiery chemistry they had(bitch where?), the “plot twist” in the last chapters is quite literally one of the dumbest, and most convoluted things I’ve ever read in my life and somehow included surprise incest. I would not recommend this book to my bitterest of enemies let alone any of my book reading friends. To any fans of this book, which I cannot possibly believe actually exist, I need to know who hurt y’all that this is what you think is good. I didn’t think it could get worse after I read Zodiac Academy last year but this book sure proved me wrong.

I wanted to love this book and I just…didn’t.

Loved the dark academia gothic vibes, enjoyed the broody morally grey MC and our shy but strong FMC, and yay for insta-lust/soul-mates!
Where this lost me was it’s uncertainty on if it was wiling to be a paranormal story or not. There were too many unanswered questions, and it felt too wishy-washy in its ambiguity. Were ghosts and curses and witches a things? Was she psychic or insane? I expected more development in terms of the paranormal, which it turns out this story is not. 
Still, an enjoyable story with plot lines that came together in a way I didn’t anticipate.

I guess you could say I went straight into this unknowing what to expect. And if you’re interested in knowing what to expect:

This was truly a dark read and it focused a lot on the plot of why are these people dying and why Corvina was invited to attend this school. The romance was more of a subplot, but damn was it THEREEEE. I love morally grey characters so when I met Vad I knew he had to be Corvina’s man. He was a bit toxic and he was very frustrating at times. 

*when I was reading this at night, I was freaked out. This is really gothic and creepy at times and I LOVED IT*

Sometimes I felt like Vad and Corvina annoyed me because of all of the suspense. The reader is truly confused until the  very end. And after reading it, I feel like I needed to know more. It was the kind of universe that probably could’ve used a duology or even a trilogy for. This is why it’s 4.5 and not 5. 

I’m totally picking up Arkana ASAP. Was not disappointed ☺️

• professor x student is *not my thing* but vad deverell has me (and corvina) in a chokehold
• gothic elements were so well done, i was very creeped out good job runyx
• such a different vibe from the dark verse series but the writing style is exactly the same, you can tell it's a *runyx* book, yanno?
• some grammatical errors and general confusion in places (riiiiight at the end, they're somehow having sex with his back pressed against her and i truly don't know how that works)
• overall very good, i loved the descriptions and the characters and the plot twist, literally only knocked a star off because i felt icky sometimes with the teacher x student vibe but it's fine i'm fine
