this book was a breath of fresh air. i have never read anything like it. the main character is unnamed and entirely unlikeable (save for a few snide comments here and there), and the plot lulled at multiple points throughout the novel. however, moshfegh did a wonderful job at conveying an utter sense of despair in her protagonist; not once did i think this character wanted to live another day. i really enjoyed the ending, specifically moshfegh’s style of writing and vibrant choice of words.
i knew reva was going to die the moment she got transferred to the towers, but that last little chapter still stung. even though reva is barely likable, moshfegh did such a great job building her and the protagonist’s relationship that i hurt for the protagonist when reading chapter eight.

✨ Thrifted ✨

This book requires quite a few trigger warnings, which I’ll put as content warnings.

I don’t really know how to feel about this book. I was recommended it by someone years ago, but never got around to it until now.

The unnamed main character has a LOT of trauma and is clearly unforgiving of that (and of others around her as a result). Her frenemy Reva is also going through a lot and comes to the main character for some kind of solace, although she never seems to find it.
The language is incredibly descriptive so I could imagine EVERYTHING that was going on, which I appreciated most of the time (except for when it was triggering) 🥺

I really burst out laughing when the artist Ping Xi appeared with his ‘splattered paintings, à la Jackson Pollock, made from his own ejaculate’ 😂

I’m not sure I would recommend this, but maybe once I know what the deeper meaning of it is I can appreciate it more and come back to review it in a different light ✨

i thought it was just ok? i get what it was trying to do and i didn't think it was bad necessarily. i just didn't get that much out of it. the main character was meant to be unlikable and definitely succeeded. i understand the sentiment behind resting for a year; it could potentially be triggering for people struggling with addiction. also, the ending felt rushed in my opinion and kinda came out of left field (i anticipated it but when it happened it felt anticlimactic). so it's a very neutral territory book for me.

Great great first half, especially taking about sleep and how lovely it truly is.
Again oddly relatable, wouldn't mind sleeping for a year.
